John (2George, 1Richard) Lewis (Oral History)

There are at least three John Lewises who migrated to Spotsylvania Co VA in this time period:

1. There was a John Lewis who married Elizabeth McGrath. This John was also known as John Lewis, Jr.

William Terrell Lewis' 1893 book states that John Lewis, Jr. married Elizabeth McGrath, sister to Mary (McGrath ) Hart, third wife of Maj. David Lewis. Elizabeth McGrath married secondly Col. James Taylor III of Caroline Co., and they apparently had at least one child (Bodie. vols 7 & 8). Zachary Taylor, brother of Col. James Taylor III, was the grandfather of Pres. Zachary Taylor. I am inclined to think John Lewis, Jr. was the John Lewis who died at F'burg in 1749 with adm. of the estate started by Elizabeth Lewis and completed by William Lewis.

This was most probably John Lewis b/o David Lewis of Albemarle Co VA. This John may have married an unknown spouse in his youth. In about 1740 John married Elizabeth McGrath. John's will was probated 3/1749 in Spotsylvania Co VA. The William Lewis who witnessed the will was either John's brother, William of Hanover Co VA, or nephew William Terrell Lewis. After John's death, Elizabeth married James Taylor III who lived in Orange Co VA.

2. The second John Lewis was the brother of Zachary Lewis II. This John Lewis married Sarah Iverson. Very little else is known about him other than his name.

3. This John Lewis lived in Richmond, King and Queen, Caroline, or Spotsylvania counties of Virginia.

John Lewis of Virginia was born about 1690 in Middlesex Co VA. In about 1715 probably in Middlesex Co VA, John married Elizabeth Lewis b. c. 1695. (Note, this is possibly Elizabeth Christopher.)

John is believed to have migrated to Richmond County with his family before the birth of son, William. By 1727 John and his wife migrated to Spotsylvania Co VA.

An important clue to the relationship of this John Lewis and the subsequent Lewises of Fredericksburg is the 1731 Spotsylvania Co VA probate which lists John Lewis as a 1/10th shareholder of a copper works at the "great fork of Rappahannock River in Spotsylvania Co., Va." It wasn't until 1734 that Orange County was split from Spotsylvania. And it wasn't until 1749 that Culpeper County was split from Orange County. The actual location of the copper works is the confluence of the Rapidan and Rappahannock Rivers at what is now the border of Culpeper and Spotsylvania Counties.

John and Elizabeth lived the remainder of their lives in Spotsylvania Co VA where they are believed to have died.

July 4, 1727. Larkin Chew of Spots. Co., Gent., to John Chew of same co., Gent. £35 Ster., 335 a. of land--part of pat. granted sd. Chew April 6, 1712, in St. Geo. Par., Spots. Co., joining the lands of John Lewis and Richd. Buchner. Witness: Henry Willis, Henry Goodloe, T. Staige. Rec. July 4, 1727.

*This is possibly John Lewis b/o Zachary Lewis II of Fredericksburg. The Zachary Lewis family is connected to the Chew family through the intermarriage of their grandchildren.

Spotsylvania Co VA Deed Book B (1729-1734), p. 118:
July 6, 1731. John Williams of the city of Bristol, Merchant, appts. Wm. Fauntleroy of Richmond Co., Va., his attorney, etc., to convey several parts and shares of and in 'a certain Copper work intended to be carried on in the great fork of Rappahannock River in Spotsylvania Co., Va. . .by virtue of one Indenture of Lease granted by one John Findenson' etc., to Lyonel Lyde, John Taylor and Andrew Lewis [?], one-fifth each , and to John Lewis, Wm. Williams and Cornelius Lyde one-tenth each. Witnesses: Wm. Stevens, Thos. Trenayler.

The Virginia Herald July 15, 1808 3:3
Will be sold, at public sale, to the highest bidder, in the town of Stevensburg [Culpeper Co VA], on the 20th day of August next, the tract of land, belonging to the estate of William Gray, deceased, containing about 1300 acres, which may be divided with convenience into 3 or more farms so as to suit purchasers if required. There is on this land a copper mine which was worked to advantage in the first settlement of this part of the country, and I have no doubt from information lately obtained that it may now be carried on to a considerable advantage, and profit to any person or company that will engage in the business; but the advantages exclusive of the mine, that this farm possesses, is a sufficient inducement for a farmer or grazer to come forward and purchase as it is equal to any farm in the neighborhood for grain or grass.
Gabriel Gray, Executor of Wm. Gray, dec. Culpeper, 10th July, 1808.

*This is possibly the John Lewis who married Elizabeth McGrath. Connection may be through John Taylor; as Elizabeth married James Taylor III after John's death in 1849.

Albemarle Co VA Records (Mar. 1746 - May 1747)
Deed with livery & seisen from John Lewis to Thomas Goolsby was ordered and recorded. Elizabeth, wife of sd Lewis, relinquished dower right.
In 1749 there was a Eliz. Lewis who administered the estate of a John Lewis, with Larkin Johnston and others.
Spotsylvania County Records 1721-1800, p. 58:
£50 William Lewis, admr. of John Lewis, decd, with Benjamin Davis, sec. Mch 6, 1749.

*This is possibly the John Lewis who married Elizabeth McGrath. The William Lewis who witnessed the will was either John's brother, William of Hanover Co VA, or nephew William Terrell Lewis.
