Descendants of Col. James Lewis "of the Rapidan" VA

Generation #2

James (4James, 3John, 2George, 1Richard) Lewis, Jr. of Spotsylvania Co VA

There are four significant James Lewises in Spotsylvania Co VA at this time.

    1. The first James is James "of the Rapidan" Lewis. This James is believed to be the ancestor who migrated north and west from the Virginia coast to Caroline and later Spotsylvania Co VA.

    2. The second Col. James "of Portland" Lewis was born in about 1746 in Spotsylvania Co VA. In about 1770 probably in Spotsylvania Co VA, James married Elizabeth Minor b. 8/3/1753 in Louisa Co VA. James and Elizabeth are first found in records where they and James' mother, Sarah, are cited in a Spotsylvania County land transaction. From this document, we are informed that James is the son of William and Sarah Lewis of Spotsylvania Co VA. Elizabeth's identity is found in the 1772 probate for her mother, Sarah Carr Minor.

James and Elizabeth lived their lives in Fredericksburg VA. Elizabeth is reported to have died 3/30/1787 in Spotsylvania Co VA. James is last recorded on 3/30/1792 where he received land and money from the estate of Thomas Burbridge.

    3. The third James Lewis was a descendant of William Terrell Lewis who conducted business in Spotsylvania Co VA.

    4. The last James is James Lewis, Jr. who is believed to be the son of the first James Lewis and is the subject of this research. His story is important to this research; as he is possibly the father of James Lewis b. c. 1772 in Spotsylvania Co VA. The latter James is definitely a cousin as proven by DNA.

James Lewis, Jr. was born in about 1756 in Spotsylvania Co VA. In about 1771, James married an unknown spouse.

This James was possibly a lawyer; as he appears in several court cases in Spotsylvania Co VA. James died before 4/1802 when his death was recorded in a lawsuit.
